As you probably know, I encourage people all over to start their own social media cafe rather than trekking to the nearest big city and then moaning about how long it’s taken to get there.
I want to be absolutely clear, I own nothing here. I have no control over or responsibility for anything that these groups or their members do or say. Neither do they owe me or the Tuttle Club any allegiance – any affiliation is purely informal and may be as tenuous as the fact that one of the founders may have once said something to me about being interested in what we’d done. I have a feeling though that if I’d tried to franchise the idea with contracts and fees and branding and such, they wouldn’t be springing up quite so perkily.
We’re all in it together, kid.
Outside the Central London group (that’s us) I am aware of the following social media cafes, tuttles and tuttle-inspired events. I’m sorry if I’ve missed anyone out. If I’ve left something in that died long ago, let me know.
In the UK, working roughly upwards from the southernmost (though my geography isn’t *that* good) …
Cornwall
Devon
Brighton
Hove
Lewes
Tunbridge Wells
Rochester
Twickenham has kukutana
Thames Valley
Oxford
Bath had a meeting and there’s a facebook group but not sure if there’s any more.
Cardiff has Trydan
Cheltenham
Cambridge has Twig
Coventry & Warks
Solihull

In mainland Europe, I’m only aware of:

In the Land of the Free:

@langley started something in Denver, CO but it appears to have closed…
Chris Heuer has run a social media cafe at Citizen Space in San Francisco, CA

So who’s going to get going on Asia, South America, Australasia, or Antarctica…?

Hi Lloyd,
just wanted to tell you that the Barcelona Social Media Cafe has a new page at http://barcelonasmc.com/
Thanks for the inspiration sir…
Thanks Chris, I’ve changed that in the post.
and thanks for taking the inspiration and doing so much with it – keep it up 🙂

Lloyd:
Loving seeing how the Tuttle Club is spreading organically. That’s what happened with the Social Media Breakfast series I kicked off in Boston back in August 2007. We’ve made to more than 30 cities, but just not London yet. When I finally make it over there, we’ll do a mashup 🙂

Lloyd thanks for your post and support for Kukutana in Twickenham.
My motivation for starting kukutana in Twickenham was inspired by my friends who live around the world and work in different industries to me but have an interest in finding out about social media, what people are doing, how to get going etc
Then in June I met you and was inspired by the Tuttle club and the idea of it being a regular place and time each week, helped – so I talked to a few people I know locally and overseas and decided to put a ning site together and then try and find somewhere locally where people could meet and get a cup of coffee and each week have a topic which is used as a point of discussion, people can join in, lead the discussion or just have a coffee and a chat.
Our first meeting went well and we had people from news, broadcast, fitness, PR, technology, charity, marketing, sport and local small business owners coming along.
Last week, was cancelled due to filming an Advert in the restaurant, so this week we will see what how we get on.
Thanks again for your support and look forward to catching up with you again soon.
Julie
Julie, you’re very welcome – keep letting us know how you’re getting on and if there’s anything I can do to help.
Thanks lloyd, found out yesterday that my local MP, vince cable is going to come along to one of the kukutana meetings at the end of January – this should help keep the momentum up and also help spread the word about this type of intitiative.
Also, have had a couple of people enquire about setting up cafes in their area – so have sent them here.
Not entirely sure if Bletchly Park’s “StationX” meetup falls under the category of a ‘tuttle’ as it is somewhat irregular, but it would be nice for it to become moreso.
Thanks Alison, yes of course – it falls under the category of “tuttle-inspired” events. Irregularity is not a disqualifier in my book 🙂
Hello Lloyd,
together with a friend I am setting up the first – as far as I know of – social media aperitivo in Modena, Itay, November 11, 2009.
I just wrote a long message about the event here:
http://www.kukutana.com/profiles/blogs/setting-up-your-own-social
Hello Lloyd,
I have a question. If you had to describe the value of the social media cafe’ in one sentence, what would you say?
Thanks!
Hi Marisa, I think it’s different for different people, (and it changes for me over time too) but my favourite way of saying it at the moment is that:
we’re all building social capital by creating new connections and richer personal relationships in an informal setting.
Thanks, Lloyd,
I like what you said. I asked because I have already been asked the “dreadful” question: what is it there for me?
Perhaps this person was thinking that we are going to provide some miraculous trick for making money:-)
Yeah, people looking only for what’s in it for them tend not to stay long at Tuttle, thank goodness!
Have a look here on the wiki at something we’re pulling together to talk about what we do and what value people get as participants and sponsors.
excellent!
many thanks
Hi Lloyd, Im going to be in London next week at the OnePound40 event amongst other things. Will you be there?
Excellent, look forward to seeing you! Yes, I’ll be at OnePound40 all day I expect 🙂
YAY – see you there!
Hello Lloyd,
if you are curious, please have a look here http://www.kukutana.com/profiles/blogs/setting-up-your-own-social
to see how our Social Media Aperitivo went.
The experience was positive and we are planning a second event.

[…] It’s no surprise that Social Media Cafes have sprung up across the globe as the rise of social networking spreads. There are more than 20 in the UK inspired either consciously or unconsciously by London’s Tuttle Club and Lloyd Davis. They are listed here. […]
